The Story of the Swamp Guard

Penetrating deep into the Fall, people discovered abandoned elven buildings. On the wall of one of the sanctuaries they found an image of a humanoid creature with a strange staff. Having deciphered the surviving records, they learned about the Swamp Guard — the ancient keeper of the swamps.
It was he who, according to the manuscripts, taught the swamp elves to tame Koaks, to see "whisperers" and to read signs hidden in the fog. His weapon was not just a staff, but an ancient, still living branch, grown into the hand of some prehistoric creature. Poisonous mushrooms and shreds of magical moss grew on it, feeding on the very energy of the Fall.
With his help, the Guardian could thicken the fog into tentacles, order the roots of trees to grab aliens and awaken poisonous fumes to poison enemies. Despite the elven records, the expedition found no other traces of the Guardian. Who knows, perhaps he is still watching rare guests from a dense thicket, keeping the eternal silence of his possessions.
